Being voted San Diego’s Best Deli/Sub Shop in 2010 by The San Diego Union-Tribune and hype about New Jersey Mike’s Subs having some of the best sandwiches in San Diego we had to try this place out! Wow, these subs are fresh, delicious and indeed some of the best sandwiches we’ve had in San Diego!

Jersey Mike’s Subs is a franchise (first sub shop opened in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey) with several locations throughout San Diego and over 500 locations nationwide. We visited Jersey Mike’s Subs in San Marcos on Grand Avenue (located next to GameStop). It is off the 78 freeway W. San Marcos Blvd exit in a strip mall with several stores (Lowe’s, Best Buy, Staples, etc.) and restaurants (Two Brothers from Italy, In-N-Out, Phil’s BBQ, etc.). If you’re not familiar with the area it is easy to overlook with all the shops and restaurants.

The atmosphere was casual and clean with a modern inside design. The inside décor consisted mainly of large black and white photos and artwork of places in New Jersey, Jersey Mike’s logos and a surfboard hung on the wall with a Jersey Mike’s Sub decal on it. There were several table and chair setups and booths for inside seating with four two-seater tables in the front for outside seating. Two flat screen TV’s were inside for watching sports. A large glass case displaying all the fresh deli meats and cheeses could be seen as we waited in line to place our order.

We ordered a regular size #43 Chipotle Cheese Steak sub ($7.25), a regular size #9 Club Supreme ($7.50) and two fountain drinks ($1.89 each). Upon placing our order, we watched the meats and cheeses being sliced as our sandwich was made fresh to order. Jersey Mike’s Subs uses the highest quality meats and cheeses. And the bread is baked fresh daily in each store. Sandwiches made “Mike’s Way” (optional) come with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, oil, red wine vinegar, olive oil blend and spices.

The Chipotle Cheese Steak sub (#43 on the menu) was served hot, fresh and tasted delicious! It came with grilled onions, peppers and chipotle mayo and was served on fresh baked bread. The sandwich was super tasty and one of the best cheese steak sandwiches in San Diego we’ve had (and would give Philly Frank’s Steaks a run for their money).

The Club Supreme sub (#9 on the menu) was amazing! It came with fresh roast beef (tender and tasty with a fresh pink inner color), turkey, Swiss cheese, bacon, mayo and we asked to have it made “Mike’s Way” (with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, oil, red wine vinegar, olive oil blend and spices). The Club Supreme was one the best cold subs in San Diego we’ve had!

Overall, we were enjoyed our Jersey Mike’s sandwich experience. The service was super friendly, the atmosphere was clean and casual and the sandwiches (hot and cold subs) were excellent (some of the best in San Diego we’ve had)! We understand local coupons are readily available and often delivered in the mail (i.e. get a free sandwich when you buy one sandwich and two drinks) which can save you a few bucks. We recommend trying Jersey Mike’s Subs (you can’t go wrong with a Club Supreme #9 or Chipotle Cheese Steak #43) if you haven’t before (there are several locations throughout San Diego) – It won’t disappoint!
